about

This album is based on a recording of the 5-hour performance of the AMS Synaesthetic Sequencer which took place in a venue called BEDROOM on 22 June 2013 as part of the Edinburgh Annale art festival:

www.annuale.org/annuale-2013/synaesthetic-sequencer/

This recording has been broken down into 40 "stems" which can either be enjoyed in their own right or combined/remixed to create new pieces.

If you do create any new tracks from these stems, please let me know and I will include them on a future remix album.

The Synaesthetic Sequencer converts a feed from a video camera into a 64-step sequence of colours which are analysed for the amount of red, green and blue making up the colour. These values are then converted into note values and played simultaneously by three separate sound modules.

When configured for performances such as the one at Annuale 2013, the sounds corresponding to red, green and blue are played through speakers arranged in a triangle formation. The recording of this performance has the sounds arranged in stereo space with red slightly to the left, green located centrally and blue slightly to the right.

There was another performance of the Synaesthetic Sequencer in 2013, namely at the Edinburgh Art Festival in and the stems captured at that performance are also available:

Aleatory Music Systems East Lothian, UK

Aleatory Music Systems (AMS) is an ongoing research project by Chief Scientist Robert Baldock to explore the boundary between order and chaos in systems music and computer music. Source material comes from radio, analogue synths and field recordings. Most of the more abstract pieces are improvised in real time using either Java or Max/MSP performance applications. ... more
